How do I know if I need Counselling?
Everyone will experience challenging times in their lives. Sometimes we adapt to these circumstances, but just as often we are left struggling to adapt. If you are struggling to understand or adapt to life’s challenges, then counselling and/or psychotherapy can help.
What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy both involve talking to a trained professional but differ in focus and depth. Counselling is usually short-term, helping with specific issues like stress or grief. Psychotherapy is longer-term, exploring deeper emotional patterns and past experiences. Counselling is more solution-focused, while psychotherapy aims for lasting change by addressing underlying psychological issues and more complex emotional difficulties.
What does Counselling and Psychotherapy look like?
Counselling and psychotherapy sessions are usually held weekly, starting with an initial consultation where you and I develop a plan tailored to your individual needs and therapeutic goals. Each session lasts around 50 minutes and takes place in a consistent setting, helping to build trust and continuity. These sessions provide a safe, supportive environment where you can speak openly and work through personal challenges at your own pace.
The length of therapy depends on each individual and can range from a few weeks to several months or longer. Clients play a primary role in deciding how long they continue. I will regularly review progress with you and adjust the approach as needed.
Confidentiality is a key part of the process, supported by strict ethical guidelines. There are limited exceptions, such as concerns about child safety, client safety, or legal requirements, but these will be clearly explained. Above all, client safety, trust, and wellbeing are central to the therapeutic relationship and process.
What if I'm anxious or nervous about making contact or beginning therapy?
I want to acknowledge how challenging it can be to seek support, or even to return to therapy after some time. These feelings of anxiety are completely natural, and I will do everything I can to make your experience as comfortable and supportive as possible from initial contact.
